I have worked in the home industry for many years and have noticed that designing and installing a bathroom can seem like a tough nut to crack for many American builders. Strange Rooms; bathtub, toilet, shower; and often very unsanitary spaces all seem to be signs of bad bathrooms.
When designing a bathroom (whether you’re building a new bathroom or renovating), there are many bathroom design rules to follow. So, in the selfless joy of trying to make America’s bathrooms better, read on for some basic bathroom rules.
Side note: This post covers the basics of designing a family bathroom. We will look at bathrooms with showers (¾ bath) or bathrooms with showers (full bath) or a combination of the two. Bathrooms that are simply a toilet and sink, called lavatories, are a whole different animal and are not covered in this post. Also, bathrooms in multi-family buildings (such as condos) are a whole different game because of the usage rules. (If you want to know more about any of these, let us know, we’ll be happy to explain more in a new post!)
We Built A Small Bathroom Wet Room From Scratch!
It’s the old three-in-one shower we’ve all seen. It is about 40 square meters (5′ x 8′) and these are the general rules for use.

This allows two people to use the bathroom at the same time – ideal for a shared children’s bathroom – with the privacy of accessories
