Grimshaw’s transformation of Bath’s Action Factory into an arts campus that is stronger and more active than ever.

Spa Design: The World’s Most Beautiful Wellness Retreats

Nicholas Grimshaw graduated from the factory in 1977 for the furniture company Herman Miller, a pioneer in furniture and open-plan offices. Nestled among the bright industrial detritus that follows the River Avon from Bath, the project has always been striking in its scale and clarity, characterized by simple, curved fiberglass cladding panels. The panels unfortunately oscillate between beige and taupe, evocative of the stone bathroom that was their first correction, but combined with dark glass dates back to the 70s on the side of the generation of bathrooms that are now scrubbed.

Grimshaw Architects were asked to redesign Bath Spa University, and while the site may not seem like a 21st century art school, it makes sense once you step inside. The first yellow high-tech steel structure brings together energy and industry studios, printing shops and kilns, social streets and an informal lecture hall from the main staircase. In such a large warehouse, everything seems possible, and the painting on the polished concrete floor shows how lines are used to design the building in similar ways. A simple glass box is attached to the top – more disappointing than objectionable. But it serves another purpose, freeing up space from the banal offices below and giving employees a quiet place to retreat.

The name Action Factory is not protected. It was taken from Herman Miller’s concept of the administrative office and applied to the factory, it was shocked about its importance (“play school”) and the desire to remove itself from ideas about higher education produced graduates in production. line. . No, this building is now the Locksbrook campus, perhaps the idea of future university projects in this area. By combining students, faculty and technical expertise and design departments from five sites into two, it provides a sense of stability.

The Launch Of Grohe Spa

The Action Factory was Grade II listed in 2013, shortly before Herman Miller moved to its own integrated campus, also built at Grimshaw, in nearby Chippenham. Most of the text is a summary of the “poem” that is published in full. Short lines show intent and emphasize change. The panels were replaced with glass and the factory changed. But when Grimshaw’s Ben Heath first looked at the building bought by the university, it didn’t quite fit the slogan: “Change with grace.” This became the project’s mantra as Grimshaw reversed key interventions that had turned workers into dingy office boxes away from noisy machinery. In its new form, car boxes are placed in the dark of the plot, and people take back ownership of the “super room”, as Grimshaw calls it.

An almost invisible change is to raise the roof so that the structure can support the expansion of the roof, Okalux roof windows and photovoltaic panels. New veriendeel steel trusses sit on top of the yellow “historic structure” and are decorated with a horizontal wooden roof. Now the historic steel requires the kind of parking steps where the services used to be closed, although the surrounding areas are designed to be easy to climb.

The most important building is above the main house of the first house, in the middle of the building, facing the “street” and the beautiful photo studios. The work is separated by a single-story multi-layer wall, but most of it is visible. This is how most layouts work: most spaces have open edges or fields in them. A prime example is the lecture hall: a staircase with bean bags and cushions scattered about, enclosed on the ground floor but open.
