This is Alexandra Gater, a 28-year-old interiors YouTuber who manages small properties that are mostly rented to millennials on a tight budget.

One of her best changes is definitely the apartment in Toronto where she has lived since December 2018.

One of Gater’s biggest pieces of advice is to paint her house a fresh coat of bright, vibrant colors when moving in.

“Pay the extra money to paint it white or whatever color you want. It made a huge difference when we moved in, it felt so new,” she said.

“I loved it because I really wanted a pink couch, but I didn’t want to invest in a $3,000 pink couch that I would be stuck with for a long time,” she said.

A comfortable rug is also essential – make sure it’s large enough to accommodate your main furniture, rather than floating in the middle of the room.

“If you’re in a living room, all the furniture should be on the carpet, but when you’re working in a small space, this can be difficult,” said Gater.

“So I turned my rug vertically so all the furniture fits on top of it. In fact, it makes the space seem larger.

“You never want a small rug floating in the middle of the room. It should anchor all of your furniture.”

Gater created a gallery wall and invested in a wall-mounted television that, when turned off, can display artwork of her choosing.

He stores cables and other connections in baskets to keep them hidden and, like any millennial, has lots of houseplants.

“I’m all for putting things in baskets because they look really nice and you don’t see the mess,” Gater said.

In the entryway to her apartment, Gater raided an Ikea closet for a hygienic and discreet location to store the cat’s litter box, while also providing a surface to store her keys.

She removed the curtains to let in all the light, and the large mirror reflects it, making the room appear larger.

It was dark and gloomy when she moved in, so Gater’s main priority was to brighten it up.

She got rid of the heavy drapes and added light drapes to a gorgeous gold curtain rod, hung higher than the window frame to create the impression of higher ceilings.

In addition to giving the room a fresh coat of white, she added a beautiful headboard, elegant gold appliqués, and white linens.

Gater wanted her room to be a peaceful retreat to retreat to at the end of the day, so she kept her color scheme light and neutral.

“It’s such a bright, peaceful space that I love to be in at the end of the day,” Gater said.

A friend had shelves made that don’t screw to the wall so they can be removed when she leaves.

The books are organized by color, horizontally and vertically, and styled with cute little things to make the shelves aesthetically pleasing.

“There was a rusty, chipped, chipped light, and a terra cotta tile that was so old it looked like it belonged in a gym locker room.”

Bringing in a new light and a “visually interesting” mirror added instant style, and Gater made the most of the horizontal space with a tall shelf.

Gater considered painting the terra cotta tiles white, but ended up opting for bark flooring with a black and white star design that she will simply remove when she moves.

“The kitchen was in good shape, but it was old and a little falling apart,” Gater said.

Plants, artwork (many people also forget it in their bathrooms and kitchens, Gater said) and little things like decanting laundry detergent and dish soap into stylish containers complete the look.

“It took me 15 minutes to get the shot from behind and that makes a big difference,” Gater said.

“At first I was going to use white, then I said, you know what, I’ll just go with pink. In a small space, doing this color is a lot of fun.

“I kept all the cabinets but repainted them, which also made a huge difference,” she said.

Gater’s apartment has a mini-loft that is used for storage, but is exposed and difficult to access.

Gater decided to keep it as a storage space, but carefully organized her belongings in sleek Ikea cabinets and added lots of greenery to create the impression of a plant oasis.

She also added a library escalator — they’re usually very expensive, but Gater made her own with a regular ladder and a kit bought on Amazon for about $100 (she found a contractor to install it).

Gater believes it’s worth investing in a rental apartment because you can take everything with you.

“A lot of people have a hard time putting money toward rent and I understand that, but for me it’s the changes (maybe not so much in the kitchen) that I can take with me to another space,” she said. .

“All the lights I changed, I’m not leaving them here. I’ll put them back in their original places.

“When it comes to renovating or renovating rental apartments, it’s not about investing money in structural changes. It’s about investing in the pieces you love.

“And if I moved, all those things would come with me and I would recreate them in my next apartment.”

This summer, Jodie and I were blessed to have my daughter Bianca, who is a student, interning with us. It’s a perfect match because she has degrees in creative writing and journalism. She is not an accomplished writer and photographer, but like her mother and aunt, she loves design. I think she really is part of the family. We were looking for ways to use our design skills to help someone or group who might need our help.

Bianca recalled that upstairs at her college, Western Washington University, there was a university lounge that was supposed to be for socializing and meeting. But she said she was very sad. Nobody has ever used it. I asked him why not. She said it was so empty and unattractive. We both thought, wouldn’t it be great to spruce this up and create a space that really encourages socializing. That’s what we did.

With the help of our sponsors, Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart, we started shopping. We knew we could find chic, modern decor on a budget to achieve exactly what we envisioned. We would transform a space that people wouldn’t use into a place they don’t want
