Like many Seattle homes, the Ravenna House, built in 1929, has two master bedrooms and one bathroom. With the daughter now in high school, it was time to add a family bathroom and create a true master suite that the parents could call their own. Although the tent is finished, it contains two bedrooms surrounded by an unfinished barn. A bit dark and lacking in personality. Without sacrificing storage space, we were able to convert one of the bedrooms into a bathroom, convert a closet into a cozy study area, and expand the living space into an internal office. The bright, high ceiling is now a fully functional workspace.
Adding A Bathroom To An Attic Bedroom
Adding a custom bathroom in Seattle can greatly improve the livability of a typical Seattle home. For pitched roofs, the ties are usually opened to allow more space on the roof. Another option is to increase the number of sleeping rooms available in certain areas. For this project we decided to open up the ceiling and provide enough space to expose the connections.

We opened up the ceiling along two main lengths of the house: above the office and above the master bedroom. The new master bathroom features a separate tub and walk-in shower, as well as his and her shower stalls. DalileQuartetto floor tiles add a little pattern and warmth to an otherwise plain and neutral bathroom! Built-in shelves hold extra towels, toiletries and refined finishes. The bench and floor are small but add functionality to a luxurious shower.
The standout features of the bedroom are the under-chair drawers, bookcases, vintage style wall sconces, and a chair and cushions made by one of the home owners. Note the Daikin air conditioner above the bed, which is part of a larger split system installed on the second floor to regulate temperature throughout the year. You don’t need to worry about overheating.
The wainscoting and interior trim on the second floor blend with the aesthetics of the existing space on the first floor, giving it the appearance of its original construction. Striking pieces such as inset brass lamps and palm slatted ceilings give the space a certain “wow” factor upon entry.
The final step in this master bedroom suite is to convert a small closet into a larger closet. With plenty of storage, a new bathroom, and higher ceilings, this master suite no longer feels like a loft. Last summer, one of my clients added a master bathroom to a 1930s home in the historic College Hill neighborhood of Wichita, Kansas. Like many older homes, this one has many bedrooms but no bathrooms as found in modern buildings. How We Added A 1/2 Bath In The Basement
As you can imagine, a homeowner’s first priority is not to spend $15K on something they will never see. This is our plan.

This is the back wall of the master bedroom where the door to the master bathroom is.
This small space is visually impressive. I recommend using a tiled back wall to draw your attention to the back of the space. It helps to make the room look bigger.
We also didn’t want the space to feel like a dry box, so we added some character in the paneling and floorboard treatment.
We considered putting a medicine cabinet in the mirror, but there wasn’t enough space behind the wall because of the HVAC vents. Good medicine cabinets are expensive, and cheap medicine cabinets just look builder grade. Instead, we chose to place a shelf over the pot.
An Attic Bathroom Addition
We discussed storage needs and I even suggested shorter wall mounted drawers. The owner wanted more hanging space for towels, and when we talked about their storage needs, I quickly realized that some clever shelf storage would be perfect for these clients.
I love a good subway tile wall, but now I think I prefer a square tile subway wall. I am glad when the owner is ready.
The faucet finish is Delta Champagne Bronze. The bronze color is a little different than the bottle faucet, but enough to blend into the space.
My go-to place for glass doors in Wichita, KS is Center Glass & Glass. Available in rimless, semi-rimless and rimless versions. We skip the function without a frame. Frameless showers come with clips so they can be moved in and out of the shower. The door opened in a small place.

This project is not a bathroom remodel. We were adding a bathroom, so we had to use the existing plumbing. The drain pipe should be folded down and connected to the waste. Due to modern plumbing systems, it is not possible to drill holes in old roofs. So we had to expose the living room ceiling, run the pipes under the joints, and replace the new ceiling…lower to connect the pipes to the existing tiles.
The good news is that the ceilings in this old house are 9.5 metres. We had to lower the guest room ceiling a foot. The ceiling height of the new building is 8 metres. The guest bedroom is still 8 meters high. The rest of the house has 10ft ceilings and windows so high you can’t even feel them in the bedrooms.
The homeowner loves the idea of a wall mounted love seat. We don’t have enough space for a large toilet, so the space below makes more sense than a small one. We love this Kohler boat, but the price is a little high. After hours of searching, I found this gem on Etsy.
