I didn’t think we would ever succeed in painting this tiny bathroom, but this week it was time to pick a color and paint a small piece of wall with this windowless room. A small windowless room can be a challenge when it comes to choosing a paint color. Your mind might tell you, “I want this room to be light and bright, so I’m going to paint the walls white!” But if you don’t have the perfect artificial light, it’s not going to look good, it’s going to look dirty.

No matter what type of room you’re painting, don’t try to choose a paint color unless you’re in the room with the light (and light bulbs if it’s windowless!) that you plan to see the colors. there. light, where they will be. Sitting in the bathroom with my swatch books, I narrowed the choice down to two Farrow & Ball shades: Calamine (a lovely, neutral pink with an unfortunate name) and Shadow White (also a warm, light griege).
We ended up going with Calamine because it came out nice on the tile and we knew the girls would love it. After painting the ceiling white, we removed the disposable underlay and installed a new one in the same color as the wall.
We’ve talked about our love for HANDy Paint Products before, but they really nailed the design of this tray. It can hold a full gallon of paint, meaning less wasted refills, and has ergonomic handles on both sides for easy portability. Also, it has a magnet where I can easily store the brush when not in use. They really thought of everything.

This room only took Chris about 15 minutes and I don’t think he had to move his legs (haha!), but it took me about 45 minutes to cut. However, I was more in love with each stroke. It’s warm, soft and inviting and still works as a neutral thanks to those undertones. I don’t even miss a window here.
Finishing this room (finally!) and we couldn’t wait for the paint to dry to start adding the final pieces – mirrors, artwork, more lighting, linen closet! We are officially home!

If you have a windowless bathroom, you may be looking for some tricks to keep it clean and fresh. After a few years of staring at my monochrome guest bathroom, a new color created an opportunity to do just that!
Almost every room in my house has at least one source of natural light. But the two rooms – two small bathrooms, without windows – were very difficult to restore. For example, my guest bathroom is fully functional; but the closed way makes me not want to be there. And if I ever have a guest again, I probably won’t. I think this could be part of the solution to the split, but I was tired and wanted to solve this problem once and for all.

It took some trial and error, but thanks to the inspiration from the Clark + Kensington Color Trends 2020 palette, I think I finally got it right! One of the first things you might notice in the “before” pictures is how yellow the bathroom looks. Soft white bulbs are common, but if there are no windows in the room, you have to rely on the shade of the bulbs. In this room, the soft white did not work and left a yellow glow

I’m sure you’re probably thinking, “Why don’t they just change the lights to daylight or bright white? I would – if I didn’t make the same choice and choose a lamp that doesn’t use standard bulbs. They are getting harder and harder to find and I decided enough is enough! Not only did I need a new color, but I wasn’t going to spend a dime on special lights. I love to pick up new things, so this was not an easy hand turn.
A few years ago I also installed a bathroom fan that supports Bluetooth and has an LED light. It’s a shade greener than I prefer – not quite daytime – but it’s also a step in the right direction
