Master Bedroom Decorating Ideas On A Budget

Master Bedroom Decorating Ideas On A Budget – Often, the master bedroom is a long-forgotten, obscure, cluttered, messy space that we close the door to when friends or family come to visit.

This is the last item on our decorating to-do list; And people spend years sleeping and in dark, cluttered or mismatched places because tackling this project is low on the priority list.

I fully understand that we are all busy and money is definitely not infinite. But I also believe that creating the comfortable, cohesive master bedroom you love doesn’t have to be as time-consuming or expensive as you think.

Master Bedroom Refresh {simple Tips To Change Your Decor On A Budget}

Last fall we tackled our master bedroom and walk-in closet as part of the One Room Challenge and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Although it’s been a full eight months since I revealed our master bedroom last fall, and I have to tell you, I’m still loving the space. It’s even brighter, breezy and beachy in the summer months!

I will admit that we made some changes in our master bedroom remodel; They were all free mods.

The great thing is that we finally got rid of the TV! After weeks of not using it because the cable didn’t reach his new home; We realized we didn’t really need it! We moved some artwork to create an entire gallery wall above the dresser and left the walls open on each side of the window; And I added a long padded bench at the foot of the bed.

So this room is definitely a bit fluid and changeable; But overall we are very happy with the design. And, as I thought about this redesign, I realized that we did it within a very reasonable budget. Today I’m sharing my top tips for creating a master bedroom you’ll love on a budget! I hope this inspires you to come in and give your space some updates that you love.

Tips For A Cozier Bedroom

The color of your room contributes greatly to creating a different atmosphere in your space; And it’s probably one of the cheapest and most effective ways to create a new look. Our master bedroom was painted a nice neutral shade of medium gray by the previous owners. But I wanted a light, bright, breezy beach feel, so we chose white for the main wall and then a light aqua color called Seafoam by Benjamin Moore.

When we started decorating our master bedroom after moving into this house, I knew I wanted some kind of wall behind the bed. At the time, we had a DIY upholstered headboard that had many patterns and colors, so we decided on a white board and floor-to-ceiling wall.  I think adding some sort of panel behind the bed would help ground the bed and make that wall a real focal point of the room.

I knew I wanted to add a more chic or glam feel to our cottage-style master bedroom, and the biggest change to our room was adding a new headboard with neutral buttons and two small glam side tables. Instead of looking for high-end items like this beautiful upholstered headboard or these gorgeous mirrored dressers from Pottery Barn, I looked at online stores and discount stores like Wayfair, Overstock, and Joe’s & Men. I found our headboard and nightstands (similar to these) for sale online for a super reasonable price. Keep an eye out for online sales of pieces you want to buy new.

I usually use white bedding (like this bedspread) and then add interest with pillows or throws. This summer I added a bright and cheerful bedspread with matching pillows at the end of the bed. I got it when it was on sale so it was super reasonably priced and makes a big impact for a small cost.

The white square pillows are all from Ikea and cost less than $5 per pillow. You can also make your own beautiful envelope pillows from fabric you already have or find at a bargain; Here I have shared a great tutorial on how to make your own pillow covers. You can also sew a long wooden pillow for the front of the bed; I love the shape of the Ikea pillows.

To give your room a brand new look, you don’t have to go out and buy everything brand new. Look at what you have and see what you can renovate for cheap. We kept our old second-hand dresser and refurbished it using white chalk paint; And fits perfectly in our new place.

I made my own curtains to save money because I couldn’t find blackout canvas (or linen look) curtains at a reasonable price.

We also did the padded bench that now sits at the foot of the bed: it was actually made from an old coffee table that we cut down to size, painted and upholstered in a fabric I love. I also took a light fixture in our garage and redid it with gold spray paint. Spray paint is always your friend when trying to create a beautiful room on a budget.

We radically renovated our old, simple and inexpensive floor mirror with a few finishing touches and metallic paint.

One of my favorite pieces of art in the room. I wanted a high-end look, but I didn’t want to order pre-framed pieces at a high price. So I ordered all the frames from Ikea and then I ordered these extra wide rugs from Amazon. The extra wide mat gives the 8×10 pieces I ordered from Minted a very graphic, premium look at a very reasonable price. You can download and print your own free printable artwork or print your own large photos and frame them on these extra wide mats to create a great and super frugal art display.

Shop thrift stores, garage sales, discount furniture stores (HomeSense is my favorite, as is HomeGoods in the US) or shop online at places like Wayfair or Overstock to find items that match your look. Better yet? Buy a house!! Search your home for items that match your new master bedroom decor and creatively reuse what you already own.

The only part of our room where I splurged was on the rug – and by splurge I mean it retails for about $289 for the 9×12 size, so it’s still very reasonable. I absolutely fell in love with this large vintage repainted rug and knew it would be the perfect thing to add a cohesive, finished feel to our space.

Cool Bedroom Ideas To Liven Up Your Space

I think that even with most decorating room makeovers on a reasonable budget, it can be nice to splurge a little on one key piece. Still, these types of rugs are certainly available in all kinds of price ranges if you want to stay within a certain budget (like here, we recently ordered one for our living room).

I hope you’re inspired to create your dream bedroom on a budget and wake up to a beautiful, fresh space every morning!
