If you’ve ever been to my blog, you know that I’m all about saving money on my home projects, and the same when it comes to decorating for Christmas or any other holiday. The thing is, and I can’t stress it enough, this is a marathon, not a sprint. You need to build your holiday jewelry stash, and that takes some time, energy, and planning. Here’s how to do it without spending a lot of money…

2. Buy quickly for a few others. Summer garage sale.  Keep your head in the game even if the game isn’t for another 5 months. I found some great items at a garage sale including faux trees, ornaments, flowers, dead bows/wrapping paper, plates, whatever. Don’t take Christmas too seriously. Find other items that you can use for Christmas decorations, such as candle holders, lamps and trays. Imagine if they were decorated with paint or other Christmas decorations.  You can see some of my tips for saving money at a garage sale here.

3. Shop thrift stores.  Remember to always shop for the best deals because you never know what will be available from one day to the next. Keep an open mind as well. For example, if you get a grapevine wreath, it might not be a “Christmas” ornament, but if you add some greenery and pine cones from your yard, it will be. What about decorations that you can paint or add stickers or glue to? What about red dishes, silver trays or white candles? These items are not for Christmas, but can be used to create a cohesive holiday look. Is it white?? Outdoor Christmas Decoration Ideas And Crafts

4. Use old accessories that you may have outgrown.  Don’t take it out, take it in. You have an old castle that is no longer you. Remove the pieces you want from it and mix them with the grape powder that I mentioned about the new piece.  Or you have a little ribbon left over that is small enough to wrap a gift. Why not wrap it up with a white candle or jar for something new? Take your things out and rethink the way you used to use them or create something new from them.

5. The store has a market.  There’s always HomeGoods and TJ Maxx, but Walmart and Target also have great items. Try to wait for a sale.  You can save even more with the Target Cartwheel discount app and even 5% with their credit card program. 6. Use coupons. I rarely buy anything with money. Michaels, Hobby Lobby and AC Moore. they often have sales and/or coupons and they also have great rewards programs.  Sign up for emails and they’ll send you coupons too. I just found a great deal at Hobby Lobby with 80% off Fall/Halloween decor this week and 50% off Christmas items.

7. Take the field in Comb and your yard for pines, pine cones, acorns (make sure you prepare them to get bugs out. You can see how to do it here.) etc. That he didn’t. in your yard, as a friend, neighbor or relative.

8. Keep your color scheme simple and stick to it. Choose 2-3 colors and make it easy to mix and match from one place to another and from year to year. Plus, you always know what to look for when you’re on the hunt.

9. Use your everyday items. White dishes combined with a little red decoration go a long way. Place some faux grids in the clay over the cutting board for a simple vignette. “Shop” other rooms in your home and see what you have that can work with your color scheme.

10. Back to Basics – Plain Popcorn Strings or Round Paper Chains, Candy Stick Ornaments,  Vintage and “Old Fashioned” are back! Get the kids involved and make it a family project.

11. Way-o-maniac. Do it yourself. – There are thousands of things you can do yourself on Pinterest.  You just have to be careful not to get too much and that the cost of the equipment is not more than you can afford. 🙂

12. Free Articles.  This is my favorite! There are so many now and they are so good. Just print and frame in an inexpensive frame. (which you should also find at a garage sale)  Here is a link to some great and free printables from Country Life.

* You can also make a nice frame for notes, scraps of fabric, wrapping paper and the front of the cards you received last year. 

13. Paint it. Do you have old candle holders? Grab a $3.50 can of spray paint (red, green, gold, silver, etc.) and give them a Christmas makeover. Add ribbon and place. You can also use the same tube of spray paint on an old cookie box or an old tray or even one from the dollar store. 14. Make your own decorative pillows. I made some of these from clothes I picked up from the Salvation Army. I have also seen them made from kitchen towels or old sweaters.
