We have lived in our house for 4 years and we love our balcony. As a family we spend more time than in the gym. And when friends come over we literally go out on the back porch to catch up.

My husband works from home and has taken the balcony as his second office. He had a lot of say in redesigning/updating our porch layout and wanted the porch to have a masculine, homely feel. And I think we took it! The space feels warm and welcoming with tons of wood. We spent about $400 on a new outdoor patio, 2 barrel chairs, a coffee table, a speaker system, bamboo shades, and a new ceiling fan for our painted balcony.

We’ve had our outdoor unit for about 4 years It fits the space wonderfully, gives us a nice place to sit, and is still in good shape so I love designing around it. Last year I bought 9 new throw pillows from World Market at the end of the season at 75% off.

Our featured plate is functional but we want to personalize the space to fit our style. The coffee table is dark and heavy. And the mattress (originally from a cannabis store) is very tired and swollen.

In fact, I was so disappointed this summer that I never got around to updating our porch. Luckily we found a bamboo coffee table at Goodwill in June for $9. This is exactly the look I want for this space, and it’s inspired me to continue updating my porch!

If you find bamboo in the store and it is in rare condition, it is possible to return it. Check out my friend Lora’s article at Craftivity Design about reclaimed bamboo and rattan furniture. This is very helpful!

If you’re broke you don’t have a big budget to work with. Spend a day visiting the local boutiques. Chances are you’ll find some inspiration!

Meanwhile, my husband painted 5 shades of bamboo for the hotel. We live in a neighborhood where the houses are close to each other, and this gives us privacy when working or not. And an added bonus: the blinds keep the balcony cool during the day!

Barrel Chairs is another outlet store. My husband found them at my local Habitat for $8. At first I thought of going back to plaid, but on second thought – it makes the space look nicer. I also added some cushions to the seats to help absorb the sound.

We were shopping in early July and noticed that Target & Home Depot had shoes on clearance. I chose a neutral tank with a trellis design. It looks like natural jute, but it is made of polypropylene to resist mold. I’m happy to get a good one for under $100!

We are also adding technology to the outdoor area. We installed a set of solar lights for the night and connected them to a Wemo smart plug. My husband reinstalled the speaker system from the store and switched it to an Echo Dotwe he already had. So we can control our lights and our music with smart technology, which I find very cool!

We are very happy with how our painted porch turned out. It’s like our second bedroom, protected from the elements but still has the charm of the outdoors. If I replace the chairs, coffee table, and speaker system, we will be close to $1k on this project.

We saved a few hundred dollars and spent less than $400 by buying some useful accessories and buying a rug on clearance. Hope this project inspires you to shop with a purpose and a budget for your next project! It can be done overnight, and it doesn’t have to be expensive! Small Porch And Patio Ideas To Make The Most Of Your Space

Think how many times I’ve sat on my porch without getting stung by a bee, something spilled on the floor, or a dog crawling across the screen to attack a chip?

When we bought a 1960’s Garrison colonial with an extra porch, I dreamed of creating the perfect outdoor living room.

But we all know that life often gets in the way of our decorating dreams, so this is what my little balcony looks like in about a year:

Last summer I spruced up our little porch by dusting off the porch dusters and outdoor porch pillows from our first house, added a closet, bought some accessories for my house, and makes a quick flower pot.

At that moment, I knew that the jewelry I threw in a shoe was a temporary solution.

My husband is the cook in our house, he cooks almost every night of the year. Having a gas grill on your screened porch is very convenient if you want to cook during a snow or rain storm.

It took some convincing, but my husband finally agreed to leave the grill outside, which would require leveling part of the yard and creating a small patio the size of the grill.

With an outdoor grill and a small budget to buy new patio furniture, I looked to my nearby dining room for decorating inspiration.

My goal is to create a perfect design between the dining room and the balcony, which is connected by a sliding door.

The easiest way to find inspiration for decoration and create unity between rooms is to take your favorite thing from one room and use it as a building block.

Screened In Porch Ideas For An Inviting Outdoor Escape

Last year I wrote about budget-friendly ways to decorate a small balcony, so I took my own advice and implemented four of these ideas (so far).

My husband replaced the old, rickety sun light with a better version for about $50 (I didn’t sell it, but it looks like it) to instantly improve the room.

Inexpensive string lights combined with small decorative hooks provide extra light and a nice atmosphere when we eat outside (bonus: the kids love them).

I sold the old outdoor furniture and bought inexpensive outdoor chairs and a small table from Target, and with the outdoor grill, there is room for a small group.

This fix has not yet been made. Finally, I want to paint the bottom of the door, replace the door hardware, and add wood to the ceiling.

But it’s good progress, and it shows that decorating a closed living room (or bedroom, for that matter) doesn’t happen overnight—it takes time to figure out what you want and need. .

Today I’m going to make a watermelon mojito. Please pray that I have a few minutes alone to enjoy my balcony.
