Master Bathroom Ideas With Tub And Shower – Two weeks ago I shared my mom’s guest bathroom and you loved it. I know you can. This is quite a change from the dark green space. (Or is it black? The controversy continues.)
Today I’m back with more bathroom excitement – a peek into my mom’s master bathroom, complete with a new freestanding tub! Two years ago, we refreshed the space to eliminate basic wear and tear and add a little more of its feminine style. It’s nice for a while, but my mom really wants to improve the whole room. He is not a fan of tiles on the floor or the bathroom and it wears him down every day. He finally realized that he was living with something he hated and vowed to change it as soon as possible.

Before we go to the after photos, let’s take a look at the before photos and the space design plan.
Beautiful Shower Ideas
Here’s a look at the “before”. This is the space before we freshen up with special makeup. My mom doesn’t like the basic makeup of the builder, not to mention that it’s a double sink when she doesn’t really need it.
Here it is with enhanced makeup. This is great, but the rest of the room is itching to change.
Isn’t that amazing? Hexagon tile floors, tile tops throughout, and a freestanding tub…holy smokes! When you walk into this place, it really feels like a hotel and my mom couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Let’s dive into the details.
I have to say, I am most jealous of her new freestanding tub. I have a huge bathroom and would probably use it every night if it was my house! He used to have an old jacuzzi tub and when we realized that a freestanding tub could work in its place, we were both very excited. My mom isn’t a big person either, but she’s taking baths thanks to this awesome new tub!
Beautiful Master Bathroom Remodel Ideas To Help You Envision Yours
We went with black wall mounted hardware and it really pops against the toffee box and white tub.
I love the tub shape because it’s so simple. Makeup has a lot of detail and I don’t want this tub to compete with that. Instead, it’s just nice and sleek and big!
I bought this special bath tray for my mom to use here for Mother’s Day and I think it works perfectly. Wood adds warmth and complements the wood vanity. Plus, it even has room for a glass of wine!
Above the tub, we chose this gorgeous brass pendant light and wow, it adds so much to the space. It brightens things up, but also brings some glam to the whole room.

I love how the capiz shell on this pendant light complements the capiz mirror in the guest bathroom. Repeat elements throughout your home to make everything cohesive.
A really clever addition is adding a shelf next to the freestanding tub. Not only is it a great place to put a glass of water or a bottle of shampoo, but it’s also an ideal place to play art and accessories. We asked the contractor to add a piece of wood on top of the tile and he painted it the same color as the wall (Benjamin Moore “Mist Fog”). Originally we were going to do wood for the shelves, but between the bathroom tray and the vanity, that side of the room felt a little heavy with wood.
For art, we know we have to go big to fill this big void. (The ceiling here is 10 feet!) Mom ordered a print on the left 24 × 36 from Juniper Print Shop and then she bought this little piece Minted at 18 × 24. We used this cheap black frame from Target to frame them. I always say that every room should have some black, I said I’m glad we went with black for the frame.
The plant in the wooden candle is wrong because there is no window, and the other is the potus plant that usually lives in my mother’s living room. I’m trying to find a nice fake plant to replace it with and if I find something that looks realistic I’ll let you know!

Now, on the other side of the room… the shower! The layout of this room is similar to the previous image.
However, we ended up asking the contractor to move the temperature control and on/off valve to the right side of the shower. That way, my mom can take a shower without getting wet! I highly recommend it if you are remodeling your shower.
My mom also wants a bench in here (good for shaving legs) and we’re not sure if we have enough space. Instead of building another one on the right wall, we asked the team to build a small angled bench. It turns out very cute!
The shower was special for my mom and I love how they went above and beyond with it. She also bought a beautiful toiletry bottle for all her things to look clean and organized.
Primary Bathroom Ideas To Covet Right Now
And what about the tiles? Isn’t that cute?! We originally planned to open with this claw box, but it was back in order, the same problem we had in the guest bathroom, so we searched like crazy and found this replacement. It’s called WOW in “Phase” and we use the “Warm Gloss” color. My mom ordered it from her local tile store, The Tile Outlet, and it arrived fast! Our original tile was a little more gray, while this tile is warmer and looks more brown.
I am thrilled with the final result. I think the gray color is great here and everything works as it should.
For the glass, my mother chose a piece of soft glass with a black trim. It looks nice and tidy here and he doesn’t have to worry about opening and closing the door. It was the same as the previous setup that he liked, so we knew it would work in the new space.
I’ve always loved how this particular makeup turned out and I love it even more now. You can see that we had a box above the shower around the room, including the top of the sink, as a small backsplash. We didn’t have tile behind the vanity because tile is expensive and would waste a lot, but you never know for sure.
Wet Room Ideas You’ll Love
As for the vanity details, I got this stunning dresser from Magmad in Chicago two years ago. I had them refinish it and then ordered one from Lowe’s with a stone countertop, faucet and sink. We retrofitted the entire dresser to make it a dresser and it worked beautifully. You can read more about the process in this blog post.
We ended up keeping a lot of the same accessories and pieces in the makeup area because it still reflects my mom’s style. Now the rest of the room matches perfectly!
When designing a bathroom space, I like to use at least two metals. This creates interest and keeps the room from feeling too flat. Here, we choose black and brass. We have black hardware in the shower and tub with a black shower door.
Next, we have brass chandeliers, sconces and vanity faucets to bring out the warmth of the gold/brass tones.

Oh, and we also chose black and black for the toilet. It’s all about the little details to bring the space together.
These before and after pictures confirm that this place has come a long way in such a short time!

Next week, my mom will take over the blog to share lessons learned along the way with these two big projects. This is his first time in a project of this magnitude and I know he has a lot of wisdom to share. Oh, and he would also change the project timeline (I think they finished two bathrooms in three weeks!) with the entire budget for the bathroom. I know you always like to look at numbers. Stay tuned for this…
