I gave myself a very tight time frame and *hired* my dad to help me pull off this DIY bathroom makeover in a hurry. I’ve shared one of her bathroom renovations here before, she’s done more than I can count! It was a huge boost to knock something off our list so quickly (a week!) and it was better than we expected.
We wanted to use materials we had on hand and had been saving from previous projects to make this project as economical as possible. We’ve been doing DIY home improvements for a few years, so stashing some leftover materials from other projects is a cost-effective way to make significant changes without breaking the bank.
Before we get into remodeling, I want to acknowledge that not everyone has old tiles lying around or handy family members to help keep labor costs down. We’ve done other DIY bathroom renovations completely on our own without asking for help, so even if you’re not in a position to get professional DIY help, I think you can learn all the skills you need to DIY bathroom. This kind of renovation without hiring a general contractor.
If nothing else, you can outsource smaller parts of the job, such as plumbing or electrical, and do the rest. This is a great way to stretch your budget when you can’t do every part of the project yourself.

Besides reusing materials and fixtures we had collected from other renovations, we purchased the last few items we needed at Lowes and the end result I am very proud of. I mean… let’s look at the before and after side by side.
Isn’t the transformation great? I’m always so proud of all the things we can accomplish in a small room with a little time and a lot of planning.

Genius Design Ideas To Make Your Small Bathroom Feel Larger
Given that this site was completed in just a week with just two of us working on it (neither of us experts!), here are a few things that will affect how much time or money you spend compared to us. .
The first thing I want to point out is how small this site really is. If it were bigger, we wouldn’t be able to finish it as quickly, nor would we be able to use scrap materials that really affect the cost of the bathroom remodel. If it was bigger, if it included a freestanding bathtub, or if you were doing a DIY bathroom renovation for the first time, it would definitely stretch your budget and give you a few months to tackle the project.
I had a really hard time photographing it to show the size because it is so small. The horizontal photos are probably the best I have.
This is also a small bathroom in the basement. It doesn’t get as much traffic as our main floor restroom. Many of the design decisions we made here had budget and time in mind. If this were our master bathroom, we would have made a few different decisions (like the wall tiles!).

As for the timeline… we had nothing else to do that week (besides supervising my four kids!), so I doubled down on the project to see it done on time.
I also organized our project daily with tasks for all of my dad and I to make sure we were maximizing our time, even while the mortar or paint was drying.
For example, I could be cutting the tile panels to size while Dad measured, marked and installed. He could build the outdoor toilet while the tiles were being laid. We were able to paint the beadboard in the front yard and then touch it up once in place to allow the grout to dry, etc. This organization was very important.
When we hit a snag (like finding out we needed a new shower stall that needed replacing), we adjusted our timeline and dug into the budget contingency, but we didn’t quite hit it off.
What To Know Before Adding A Bathroom To A Basement
As for planning… a big budget will also help a lot. I have a DIY room makeover budget template here that you can paste for free if you like. Our budget had a lot of $0 line items that we were able to reclaim from other projects (yay!).
We also didn’t have to move any pipes, they were already there, just changed the fixtures and finishes. In addition, we also inherited some planned renovations from the previous owners when we moved into our (our) new home. There was a shower base and some plumbing equipment left on storage shelves when we took possession of the house. We didn’t end up being able to use it all, but it sure helped!
Dad had also just renovated his house, so we were able to use the leftover tile, grout, paint, and bead board that was taking up space in his garage.
I thought it would be a good idea to talk about some of the design and renovation hurdles we tackled with this conversion. I think we often see before and after with little discussion about “how” we got there, and one thing I’ve found time and time again is that refactoring is actually a great exercise in problem solving.
Dingy And Dark No More Basement Bathroom Reveal
I love interior design and designing all the spaces in my house and even some other houses. I love a good challenge and this bathroom is definitely one. I wanted the space to be cohesive and feel like it was still an intentional part of our home and the design choices we made in the rest of the house, but I also wanted to make the most of the reclaimed materials, so I knew I would. Some compromises have to be made.
You can see I switched from black fixtures to chrome and ditched the tile shower surround for a one piece set when we realized we needed to replace the shower base.
As with any room makeover I do, I took the time to plan the layout and budget ahead of time. You’ll see that it definitely evolved a bit while I was working on the renovations and the budget.
When we started planning this little bathroom makeover, I knew I would use some leftover black and white ceramic tile that my dad had in his basement bathroom. I bought a pack of bags and although there is not much left, there is enough for this small space to cover the bathroom floor.

I had a hard time finding a design that connected with the style we did the rest of our house with these tiles in mind. We have a cozy modern style with classic finishes like shaker cabinets in the rest of the house and this tile is definitely a retro classic. We used black grout to modernize it a bit and natural wood for the vanity to add warmth to the windowless space.
I’ve talked about this many times, but adding wood or other natural elements to a modern space (or any space) helps add so much warmth and interest to a room…even a bathroom. In a bathroom or wet room of any kind, a wooden floor is not ideal. Bringing the wood tone to the bathroom sink allowed us to incorporate wood without much extra cost. I’ll share more about this budget vanity in a bit!
After starting the site, I started putting in elements that we would use for a touch design board. I love how this can evolve as you go and you can confirm your design choices with samples before installation. See how it looks in the picture above.
