Almost every room in my house has at least some source of natural light. But two rooms – two small, windowless bathrooms – proved particularly difficult to redesign. My guest bathroom, for example, is perfectly functional; But the way it’s closed, I don’t like living there. And if I ever have guests again, they probably won’t. Maybe it could be part of dealing with quarantine, but I’m bored and want to solve this dilemma once and for all.

It took some trial and error, but thanks to inspiration from the Clarke + Kensington 2020 Color Trends palette, I think I finally got it! I’m sure you’re probably thinking, “Why don’t you just change the bulb to daylight or bright white? Me – except I made the same unfortunate choice of choosing a light fixture that didn’t use standard bulbs. They got harder and harder to find, and I decided enough was enough Not only do I need new paint, but I won’t be spending any more money on custom bulbs!

The existing wall is partially covered with gray-purple paint. This is actually a very nice color… in the right room. But over time I realized that it was the wrong color for this bathroom. The lighting, worktops and tiles don’t match the tones of the interior, making everything look sickly and worn. It’s amazing how too much color can affect a room. After adding this paint color, I stopped making any further creative progress in the design!

I say “partially covered” because I didn’t even manage to finish the first paint job. After removing all the wallpaper and fixing the drywall here, I had to do some more patching near the old light fixture. I painted most of the room and finished patching, but I stopped. Word to the wise: If you cover the joint like this, be sure to seal it with a primer.

The patched surface of such a wall is more porous than a wall that is painted or has been painted, so there is a possibility that the paint will absorb and spoil the uniform appearance of the gloss when the light hits the wall (and the Place looks smaller than the others, or simply very bad). It can also require multiple coats for even coverage, so a primer is the best way to prevent this and is cheaper than buying more paint for multiple coats!

Mixing primers today, I haven’t found any that can do a single coat, without flaking or patching, when there is a significant color change (like this dark purple to a very light white). to). I expected two coats, but actually I needed two. However, the coverage isn’t bad after just one:

From Clark + Kensington paint off another brand I’ve used in my bathroom before. I can’t quite explain the difference, but it’s…butter? velvet?
In general, it is recommended to use satin or high gloss in the bathroom. But since I worked so hard to repair the old drywall, I don’t want a Sheen where I can see every little flaw on the wall (that would be a big loser). I went with an eggshell finish instead; It’s smoother than satin but still washable for this room (I explain the trade-off between gloss and other benefits in this post if you want more info!) It’s the perfect balance. Hopefully you can see the beautiful texture left on the wall in the “after” picture in this post!

I started by painting the entire room opal white. I love this color! I bought a gallon with the Ace Hardware gift card they sent me, but it took less than half to do two coats in the room.
