Backyard Deck Decorating Ideas On A Budget

Backyard Deck Decorating Ideas On A Budget – Need some decorating ideas? Learn how we maximized space on our small deck to include a sitting area with fireplace and dining area and designed it to be functional, practical and inviting.

I was a little surprised last summer when a good friend and neighbor of mine said, “We’re not deck people. We don’t hang out on our deck.” what?? Are there really such people? Actually that thought never crossed my mind. We are outside all summer when the weather is nice. Let’s grill. We are eating on the terrace. After my husband gets home from work and the kids play, we sit there with a cold drink. I love spending time on the deck studying the Bible during the kids’ nap/quiet time. On nice evenings after the kids are in bed, my husband and I light our tiki torches and have a little nightcap with a glass of wine. We have even been known to pull out the big movie screen and watch a movie on the deck! Yes, no doubt we are good people.

Needless to say, maximizing space in our small storage is important to us. Since we moved into this house almost 6 years ago, we’ve explored a few designs and furniture combinations, but I think we’ve finally settled on how to make the most of this small space and what we need here. ! I still have dreams of expanding it one day, but for now it works well for us. If you’re also looking for small space decorating ideas, I think you’ll have fun visiting our site!

Ideas To Dress Up Your Deck

We have a walk out basement so our deck is a full story on the ground. It’s 180 sq ft (12 x 15 ft) – not as small as most townhouses/duplexes, but still small, especially for a 2200 sq ft house. When we moved in, I knew I wanted comfortable outdoor seating, along with a dining table and grill, so some creative space planning was required. But won!

We bought our outdoor sectional from Wayfair a few summers ago and have been using it a lot. It also holds up well to the elements! We always keep it hidden when not in use so that helps. (This is the cover we use to cover the sectional table and fire pit together when rain is in the forecast.) Unfortunately, our special outdoor sectional is no longer available, but I’ve linked to some similar options below. No matter what kind of patio furniture you have, whether it’s a long sectional or some inexpensive or easy chairs, it’s easy to dress it up with outdoor cushions! My favorite places for cheap outdoor pillows are actually Walmart and Big Lots. I got the blue ones from Walmart last summer and the coral striped ones in a two pack at TJ Maxx.  I knew I would buy fabric outside and make it myself! (I did this in the front yard last summer.)

We added this little propane fire pit table last summer and it’s one of my favorite things on the deck. Not only does this allow us to use our deck on cool evenings during the fall months, but we can make s’mores all summer long! When the lid is on, it doubles as a coffee table, a space-saving feat.

The rug outside was another Target find and I love how it anchors the room. There used to be a very large carpet that covered almost the entire deck, but this made the shed practically unusable after a rainstorm because the carpet was so wet that it took a day or two to dry. I love a small rug – it really separates, defines and grounds the living space. Surprisingly, it actually feels like a big deck.  Also, if we want to have dinner on deck after an afternoon shower, we can still do that.

The dining table was added last summer and I love it! The design is simple and elegant, but the best part is that it expands! There is a built-in split in the middle so we can pull it out and add chairs on either side to seat up to 8 people. But if it’s just our family of 5, we might push it a little further. The version we feature is pretty common, so I found a few similar styles (including another expandable one like ours) and linked them below. The couch and chairs are from Target.

Deco window boxes have seen better days, but I love filling them every year! My husband built these for me 7 or 8 years ago (when we lived in a townhouse – even with a small deck!), and they’re definitely a bit dated, but I love the clean look of the cedar window boxes on the floor. Like most plants they add beautiful color without taking up ground space.

(Side note: I always use the thriller-filler-spiller method for filling planters. A tall plant “thriller” in the center, colorful “filler” flowers and/or leaves, and then a “filler” plant arrangement for some plants – leaf or flower , more about plants Without knowing, it is easy to create beautiful and balanced plants from them!)

Another space saving idea is to put our umbrella on the walkway.  I don’t really like putting umbrellas in the middle of the table (it always gets in the way!) so this wasn’t really an option for us. We have a concert hall canopy over the living area, but the base takes up a lot of space and we can’t raise it when there’s more than a little wind. I found a solution with this ingenious umbrella attachment! It attaches to the deck balloons so we can place them wherever we want on the deck. It is really easy to install.

While I’m giving you my deck review, I thought I’d also let you know what’s under my stash. Since our yard is wet and we don’t have enough room for a full swing set, we installed a swing set for our kids under the deck. In fact, I spend a lot of time here pumping babies, until they learn to pump. But it’s also nice in the shade here in the summer, so we bought some Adirondack chairs and I made a little sitting area. It’s a great place to sit with a book or chat with another mom when the kids have a day of play.

Our deck is one place that definitely improves from summer to summer, but I think this is the first year I’ve been really happy with it. In fact, after I bought an outdoor rug and took it out last month, I turned to my husband and said, “I think it really happened.”  (It took a minute, because I think he was a little frustrated, ha.)  Nothing else was on my list for the day – it was just the way I wanted it!  I don’t know about you, but this is a very unfamiliar feeling for me (my “wish list” is a mile long for almost every room in the house), so I love it all summer long.

I hope you enjoyed our little summer trip and my little decorating ideas. I will be here to enjoy the summer evenings in this place as long as I can!
