My husband is very handsome and fit and was ready for this renovation. It was actually a challenge because of the size. Everything has to fit in that small space and stay that way. He eventually became the sponge of our time. My bathroom vision and style changed frequently due to a lack of items in the sizes we needed in certain finishes and shapes. It was a dirty bathroom. Your typical seventies bathroom had all the finishing touches of the time. I can’t wait to redo this bathroom and make it a beauty! This update brought that life back to life and it really shines!
Inspirational Bathroom Design Ideas
The original look I wanted for this bathroom was a modern farmhouse look, but the vanity really brought out that whole vibe. Something rustic modern was either too big or too expensive so I had to adapt my vision. I went back and forth on the colors I wanted in this bathroom (several times…ask hubby). I’m a Libra so I tend to be very indecisive. I’m surprised it hasn’t killed him yet! We bought these porcelain tiles months before this bathroom, so they really dictated the whole design. I love the heavy detailing on these tiles and knew that the top half of the bathroom needed a different style, more solid and simple.
So instead of matching the black and white tiles perfectly, we offset them with a darker dark gray on the walls. The paint color is Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams, which is almost a classic charcoal color. Dark enough to provide that contrast, but not darken the entire space like black. My father painted houses, and when I chose this color, I would hear in my head, “Are you painting the bathroom black?” What kind of fool are you?” Fortunately, they liked the finished product.
Now that we had settled on a dark charcoal color, I had to find a way to keep this small bathroom bright and clean. It was a board and a bat! We have a lot of baseboards and battens in our house and my husband has now become a pro at putting them up. Once you know the measurements and materials for it, it goes up quickly and makes such a big statement. We made the grid like a plank and made knobs on the quarter wall to really contrast with the dark charcoal color.
Did I mention my love for gold? Even though I was working in black and white in this space, I knew I had to bring in gold. There’s only one way to keep everything classy, and it looks great in black and gold. Our kitchen has gold hardware and a gold faucet right next to this bathroom, so I thought it made a lot of sense to carry it. After much thought, I found this gold tube that my husband and I agreed on and matched the other gold in the universe. Comparing gold can be difficult, especially when choosing items online, so be aware of this.

In addition to the gold faucet, we also wanted a gold towel holder and toilet paper holder. Sometimes the choice of a particular finish can limit you, but we were able to find options we liked, and for both we went with a very simplistic modern look. This heated hand towel fits perfectly into the overall atmosphere of the bathroom.
Of course I had to have a matching flush toilet (my husband thought I was crazy and claimed there was no such thing as gold), but low and behold I found this one and I love how it fits and matches.
This vanity was the bane of my existence. We ended up finding this vanity in white to match the lower part of the walls and the style. We didn’t like the handles on the original vanity (they were silver) so we replaced them with these thin gold handles to match the other hardware. It’s an easy way to update a piece of furniture to what you need, if not all the details are what you’re looking for.
The mirror should be sized to sit above the vanity and leave enough space above the mirror to add light. This mirror fits the bill perfectly. Always be sure to read the item description and measurements to make sure it’s the right fit for you.

To continue the sleeker look of this bathroom, I went with marble shelves with gold brackets (of course). They can hold a decent amount of weight, and the double shelves on the vanity fill the space well. Tall vertical pieces were chosen for the top shelf to draw the eye upwards and horizontal pieces to draw the eye to the bottom shelf. A few additions of greenery give the space bright colors. Fun items always make for great decor. I like to add to old books to tidy things up. Go to your local book donation center, remove the outer cover of the books they have and show the book itself. It’s an affordable way to incorporate books into your decor!
We didn’t have a lot of wall space in this bathroom, so I went with a fun piece of framed art. I love the golden frame on it and the simple gesture on the girl’s face. I don’t think my family likes her because they say she watches them in the bathroom, but I like her. Find fun artwork and statement pieces.
I love the ceiling light we chose for this bathroom. Unconventional for a bathroom, but that’s why I love it. We have high ceilings in this space so we could get away with a pendant hanging a little lower. We adjusted the chain it was hanging on so it was hanging at the right level. Choose things in your home that will make you smile. It sure makes me smile every time I see it. The light on the mirror complements the ceiling light in the design. Keep your lighting styles similar to complement each other and everything will look organized and unified.
