If you have a windowless bathroom, you may be looking for some tricks to keep it clean and fresh. After a few years of looking at gray guest bathrooms, a new color gave them a chance!

Small Bathroom Paint Ideas No Natural Light

Almost every room in my house has at least one source of natural light. But two bedrooms—two small, windowless bathrooms—proved difficult to remodel. My guest bathroom, for example, is functional; but because of how closed it is, I just don’t like being there. And if I ever had another guest, they probably wouldn’t either. I suspect it may be part of the quarantine process, but I’m determined to fix this once and for all.

It took some trial and error, but thanks to the Clark + Kensington 2020 color palette, I finally got the hang of it! If you’re facing a similar problem (perhaps in a bathroom or basement bathroom), consider these tips to solve both the unusual lighting problem and the quick ways to a clean, professional paint job. The text with details is below, but you can also see the changes in the video:

One of the first things you might notice in the before photos is how yellow the bathroom looked. Sure, regular white bulbs, but when there are no windows in the room, you have to rely on the colors of the light. In this room, the white just didn’t complement the rest of the yellow

. I hate that every time I pick something up (like the vanity I’ve been patiently waiting for), the light finds a way to ruin it.

I’m sure you’re probably thinking, “Why not just change the light to daylight or white?” I wish I did, but I made the same choice to choose a lamp that doesn’t use regular bulbs. They are much stronger and more affordable, and that was good enough for me, not only did I need a new color, but I didn’t want to spend a penny’s time on a specific lamp!

A few years ago I also created a portable fan with Bluetooth and LED lighting. It casts more blue than I like – not during the day – but it’s also a step in the right direction

Soft white light interference. I used the light to pick out the color. See the difference in just changing the light? I love it. 😊

The walls were usually covered with purple gray-violet paint. It’s really the only good color…in the right room. But over time I realized that it is not the right color for this bathroom. The lamps, counters and tiles just weren’t up to the task, leaving everything looking dull and drab. It’s amazing how much color can affect a room. Once I added color, I stopped doing the extra creative step of painting!

I say “partially completed”, because I did not have time to complete the first task. I had to touch up the old light a little after removing all the wallpaper and dry cleaning. I painted the room and finished it but kept procrastinating. Word to the wise: if you cover these areas, be sure to cover them with a primer

Paint – even new paint contains a primer, like the Clark + Kensington line. The main reason is the so-called

. The adjacent part of such a wall is stronger than a solid or painted wall, so there is a chance that the paint will lose a little shine when the light hits the wall (some areas look worse than others, or are really uneven). It may take several coats to get an even coat, so a primer is the best choice, and it’s cheaper than buying more paint to apply another coat!

Earlier this year, Ace Hardware sent me a care package full of sustainable, natural products (many of which I’d never used before and was excited to try) for inspiration. They also sent color swatches and information about the Clark + Kensington Color Show 2020.

When I looked at these environmental features, I realized it was a good time to return to, as K. put it, “the bathroom instead of the dying breath.” 😂

Hint: I can specify my color on my phone and go get paint at Ace Hardware one day.

And back to painting in particular: it’s probably no surprise that as a home improvement blogger, I’ve painted my fair share of walls.

I’ve also tried several different brands and color lines (sometimes it’s the same brand but different types of colors). And although most brands have color

Paint Color Ideas For A Small Bathroom To Make It Feel Big

Mixed primer these days, I’ve yet to find one that can apply one coat without peeling and touching up when there’s a big color change (eg dark purple to light white). I expected two coats and it took two. However, it is good to expand even after one:

When the second coat was dry, I took a step back and finished it. The main thing I noticed about this line: there is a big difference in

From Clark + Kensington paint among other products I used to use in my bathroom. I can’t explain the difference, but is it…butter? Velvet?

Mostly, it is recommended to use satin or gloss in the bathroom. But since I was working hard on a scrap metal repair, I didn’t want to have too much shine where I could see the little imperfections on the wall (that would be a big win). I milked the eggs instead; it’s softer than satin but still washes well for this room (I explain the trade-off between gloss and other benefits in this post if you want a little more info!). It was a good balance. Hopefully you can see the large pattern left on the wall in the “after” photos in another post!

Creative Ideas To Make Your Windowless Bathroom Bright And Airy

I started painting the whole room with white opal. I LOVE THESE COLORS! I bought a gallon with the Ace Hardware gift card they sent me, but it took less than half to do two coats in the room. So, I’m pretty sure I have enough to paint the base tub (after redoing the tub there, I never got around to finishing the final job…guess the delay paid off, ha!). I color matched the guest bathroom (no window) with natural light (main) and it looks great either way. I highly recommend it, especially since it’s hard to find a balance in white wall colors (I don’t like too “warm” white, and it’s not so white that I’m uncomfortable and boring). Well, the soft white is still warm enough to reproduce the cool green in the accent wall section and not drag the blue, green or red into the process.

I also used the rest of the home palette as inspiration for color choices to create a small accent wall. Although I’m afraid this room is probably too small to work in this style of painting, I’m glad I went with my gut and did it anyway. Green, blue and green in a color palette that has come a long way are different greens, dark purples and very small touches of blue and green.

When the opal white paint was dry, I measured and taped the back wall section to the new surface. I don’t plan on keeping the mirror (dust gets into all those painted parts of the frame, ugh) but it has a first aid kit attached and I’m still looking for a replacement. From I.

To leave it blank I measured 4 inches from the top to make my line. There was no particular logic to this; I just thought the distance worked.
