Flooring Interior Services – Flooring will always be one of the biggest costs in any remodeling project, but this cost can also vary greatly. Likewise, some homeowners complain about the cost of “flooring” every three years, while others have gone more than ten years without having to do so. According to one interior designer we spoke to, the reasons depend on the type of floor material used:
Although there is overlap between an interior designer and a contractor in Singapore, remember that it is technically the designer’s job to recommend suitable flooring materials. Implementation of the project is the sole responsibility of the contractor. So some contractors may not advise you for or against certain materials. You choose, they install: that’s it.

Some of the following are exceptions, as quality can vary: for example, not all brands of vinyl flooring are of the same quality and durability. But you can use them as a general guide:
Trend Watch: Stone & Wood Looks For Stunning Floors
Marble flooring is generally considered a luxury option, but the range of quality is very wide. For example, there is marble that can cost between $15 and $20 psf, or marble that costs up to $70 psf. Carrara marble is generally the cheapest, while Calacatta marble (especially the gold-veined variety) is the most expensive.
In recent years, Spanish Emperor marble, with its dark brown colors, has also become popular in Singapore.
Marble has a unique appearance because patterns such as veins are never exactly repeated. Our interior designer also notes that marble has good scratch resistance when polished and heat dissipates quickly through marble. This makes the floor, even if it is hard, feel cold on your feet.
The most obvious disadvantage of marble is its cost. It will never be the cheapest flooring option and maintenance can be expensive. Marble may need to be paid every three to five years and can cost as much as $4 psf.
Parquet Vs Ceramic: The Advantage Of Wood Style Porcelain Floor
Without maintenance, marble will scratch and damage easily. And it’s not ideal for rooms like the kitchen, as marble can stain easily. In addition, the marble is polished
Wood floors are very durable and can age over time. However, you want to make sure that there is uniformity (that is, the wood comes from the same type of tree), since different types of wood vary in age.
Hardwood also offers one of the widest selections, from mahogany to beech to maple and more. If you are using other types of wood furniture, you may want to carefully compare colors to match.
Our interior designer also notes that hardwood is good for homeowners who suffer from allergies. Its surface collects dust and other allergens less.

The downside is that hardwoods are prone to termite damage, so you need to act quickly when you notice these. It’s also very high maintenance: hardwood is usually protected with a clear polyurethane coating that must be resealed over time and wear.
Wooden floors do not tolerate temperature fluctuations well. Wood expands with heat and, combined with moisture, floorboards can swell and cause the boards to warp, lift or pad. You should control the humidity levels in your home: When the humidity level gets too high, you may need to use your air conditioner or dehumidifier to reduce it.
Softwood is cheaper than hardwood, and the cheapest is usually pine. These have many similarities to hardwoods, the main difference being that they scratch or dent more easily.
However, for sustainability reasons, softwood is preferred, as many types of softwood regenerate more quickly. A half-correct example is bamboo (because bamboo is technically grass and not wood, although most consider it a type of softwood flooring). Bamboo regenerates quickly, so your flooring won’t contribute to deforestation.

In addition to endless design possibilities, quality tiles are very durable and long lasting. They are stain and water resistant, hence their popularity for bathrooms and kitchens. And like marble, most tiles dissipate heat quickly, keeping the floor cool to the touch.
The main problem with tiles is the grout (the space between the tiles). Mortar is cement-based, so it can collect moisture and dirt. It’s also difficult to clean because you have to scrub deep between the tiles. This is one of the reasons why small tiles have died out, as larger tiles mean less friction between them.
Like marble, tiles are hard underfoot, which not everyone finds comfortable. However, you can get non-slip tiles that have better adhesion than marble.
The cheapest option, but vinyl flooring looks much better these days. You can find textured vinyl flooring that looks like wood, or even tile. Vinyl doesn’t feel like a “hospital floor” anymore like it did in the 80’s and 90’s.

Vinyl is durable and low-maintenance: it resists stains, scratches, water damage, and even fire. Plus, it’s non-porous and difficult for bacteria to ingest (the main reason for its old reputation as a hospital floor!).
The layered quality of vinyl flooring means it is softer and more comfortable underfoot, reducing noise and echoes.
Perhaps the biggest advantage is the speed and ease of installation. If the surface conditions are suitable, you can install vinyl flooring on it without the need to destroy it. This is also one of the few types of flooring that even an amateur can install by himself.
That said, vinyl flooring cannot be refinished. If it is damaged, you will need to cut out the entire damaged area and replace it. It is also not environmentally friendly, as its polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compound releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. At least while it’s still new.

This is unfinished for an industrial/urban look. It is as cheap and simple as possible. Polish the floor and it will be durable and easy to clean.
As mentioned, the concrete surface can crack if heavy objects are placed on it, and a porous surface can lead to mold and mildew growth if not properly sealed. Cement flooring, like marble, can become dangerously slippery when wet.
The concrete frame also fits only very specific design styles. It does not mix with more traditional interior styles such as Victorian, French cottage, etc.
The concrete surface should be sealed every two to five years depending on the severity of wear.

Microcement is versatile, it can be applied to floors and walls. It is a high strength material that is also durable and moisture resistant. Suitable for humid climates like Singapore.
However, the downside is that labor costs can be higher, as this material can only be applied by hand. Microcement also needs to be resealed from time to time depending on how often it is used.
If you need an immediate renovation, the simple solution is to use vinyl. This will always be the fastest method of installation, especially if you are laying over existing flooring rather than cutting through it.
