How To Decorate A Small Guest Bedroom – This is the most beautiful (blog) time of the year. This is a real challenge day in one room! For the past six weeks, we’ve been transforming our sad and scary guest bedroom. Where it was once red and hostile, it is now bright and soothing. Let me show you our cozy guest bedrooms and share our best ideas for small guest bedrooms!

Welcome and thanks for visiting! If you’re new here, I’m a blogger and tile enthusiast based in Toronto who mixes DIY with traditional design.

As renovation projects go, this one was easier than most, allowing me to talk more about the actual process. I’ve shared tons of FREE renovation templates and spreadsheets over the past six weeks, so feel free to check out this weekly roundup of free downloads for your next project:

A Simple Guest Bedroom

This room used to be so IN YOUR FACE. If there is a story in that place, this one screams and says: Do not enter. The red one was left over from the previous owner and I don’t know why it took us so long to get rid of it. But finally, we have a new bedroom story… one that is peaceful and welcoming.

The design of this room is very simple. I’m just wondering: if I were a guest, what would I want in the bedroom? How to make a small and comfortable bedroom for guests? How to change this tragic room…

And turn it into such a room? We remodeled this room with minor structural changes and lots of guest bedroom decorating ideas.

Let’s start with the desktop area. One of the big changes we made to the room was removing the closet. Figuring out the layout of a small living room can be a challenge. You really have to consider what is absolutely necessary and what can be left out. One change and removal of the cabinet would free up space and allow me to add this desk.

Especially in the living room, I think it’s nice to have something decorative. Something a little fancy or unexpected. This room gives the impression of being special, as if you are entering a small boutique hotel. A table can achieve this with a small surface area.

When I saw the botanical prints from the new Berry branch of Rainsford, I knew they had to go in this space. They have a vintage feminine feel and go well with the masculine textiles and patterns in the room.

I love symmetry, especially in art, and I thought the four prints would look nice on a clean IKEA Hemnes table. I outfitted the table with unexpected touches like a design book you can flip through, stacked plants for a natural touch, and just a few decorative accents like these beaded fringes.

There is also a Paris coloring book and Google Home for an escapist experience. I think guests will enjoy using it to set an alarm or listen to a Spotify playlist while they stay.

Charming Small Guest Bedroom Ideas For A Cozy Space

Versatile Furniture In a small room (this one measures 10’9″ x 10’9″), you want multipurpose furniture. I put a pair of X-Base Charcoal Plaid Ottomans from HomePop under the table.

I have several HomePop pieces in my house and I always appreciate how well they are made. This ottoman is large and works well as a seat at the table, as a chair or as a place to store your things. When not in use, they are perfectly secured. And of course they brought the boxes into the room! Side note: I have boxes in every room. Ha!

Ambient, task and accent lighting One of the main improvements to this room was the lighting. Can you believe how great the natural sunlight looks in this room? This is the brightest room in the house. The former red does nothing to take advantage of all that sun.

In this corner I have created a cozy place for reading. A chair (Swoop Arm Accent Chair in Green Velvet from HomePop) paired with a Girard floor lamp from Hudson Valley Lighting provides the best place to relax. It is important to have different light sources in the room to help you see what you are doing and change the mood.

I love how the brass of the lamp stands out against the navy blue curtains too! The curtains are of course blacked out – you want to sleep when you are a guest in this room 😉

But if you must have light, Painted no. 1 lamp from Hudson Valley Lighting is unique. It wins you over as soon as you enter the room. I fell in love with the navy, almost black color and classic brass details.

I deliberately chose a dark color to contrast with Benjamin Moore’s light walls (Paper White OC-55). Since we had a coffered ceiling in this room and it was difficult to stop and start painting, we painted all the walls, the ceiling, the door and lined the white paper with a matte finish. Its whimsical color creates a comfortable, calm feeling like a cocoon.

Storage Your guests will need a place to store their belongings. It may seem strange, but those hooks and horse prints are some of my favorite things in this room. They give the room an equestrian feel, which I really like. I hung a few covers for decoration, but guests can definitely use these hooks to hang bags or jackets.

And here he is afterwards! To be clear: my husband Sean was the one who installed these cabinets and did a lot of the heavy lifting here. I may be his design vision, but almost nothing here was created without his work!

This cabinet works better. As I mentioned, we removed the existing dresser in the room and replaced it with a dresser drawer in the closet. Now not only do we have more drawers, but it looks much cleaner. I love being able to close the double doors (logan doors from Metria) and not see any visual clutter.

The wardrobe system is PAX from Ikea. It provides a wide range of functional storage spaces, from clothes hangers to cushion storage and places to store extra shoes. If you want to know more about this closet system, check out this post.

Windows, closet doors, and bedroom doors (which we didn’t replace) were added with new trim. Metrie’s Very Square Scene II Collection door and window moldings and trims match all of our main floor finishes. We slowly replaced the old finishes as we renovated each room.

Guest Bedroom Ideas

You’ll find repeated black accents throughout the room, from door handles to picture frames and doorknobs. The combination of these details creates a cohesive look for your bedroom.

A comfortable bed But what is most important in the guest bedroom? It must be the bed.

The bed is the one we have had for years and I highly recommend it. It’s easy to move, yet durable and has a classic farmhouse style. For those chilly nights, I accessorized the bed with a checkered Euro duvet, a striped duvet (similar here ), a tartan lumbar pillow and a vintage woolen foot blanket. I just needed a simple gold crown to fill the empty wall space.

I put a cream and ivory flat rug under the bed. Darker colors ground the space and balance the white walls and ceiling. I chose 6’x9′ to ensure that the bed and green chairs were visually connected to the rug and didn’t float around the room.

You’ll notice that we’ve saved the existing cell shades in a smaller window. They work perfectly and unless we have guests in the room, we almost never draw the curtains. Renovating does not mean buying everything new, especially in a room that is rarely used as a guest bedroom.

Night cover Next to the bed I put the side table that we already had in Chloe’s room. Only problem is now I have to replace her ha! I kept it very simple with vintage photos, a small jewelry tray and a vase filled with greenery. Green plants last longer than flowers and with a tendency to forget to change the water on plants, this is a good and cheaper solution.

While I really love this guest bedroom during the day, it’s very cozy at night. Our master bedroom has no sitting area, so I sat in a green chair, tea by my side, and design and pom pom magazines on my lap.

We hope you enjoy this sneak peek of our new guest bedroom! Time to close the door and finish this room.
