We tackled our master bedroom and walk-in closet last fall as part of the One Room Challenge, and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out. Even though it’s been eight months since I revealed my last bedroom renovation in the spring, I have to say that I’m still in love with this space. It’s even brighter, airier and beachier in the summer months!
I have to admit we’ve done quite a bit of remodeling in our master bedroom; all these changes are free.
It’s great to finally get rid of the TV! After a few weeks of not using it because the cable stopped reaching it in the new house; we realize that we really don’t need it! We moved some pictures to create a wall on the wall above the dresser and left the walls on either side of the window open; and he added a long bench at the bottom of the bed.
So this room is always fluid and changing; but overall we are very happy with the design. And when I think about this reform, I realize that we did it by focusing on a sensible budget. The color of your room goes a long way in creating different moods in your space; and it’s definitely one of the cheapest and most effective ways to create a new look. The previous owners painted the master bedroom a nice, neutral, medium gray color. But I wanted a light, airy beachy feel, so we went with a white wall and then a light aqua color called Seafoam by Benjamin Moore.
When we started decorating the master bedroom when we moved into this house, I knew I wanted some kind of wallpaper behind the bed. At the time, we had a DIY headboard that was quite colorful and colorful, so we opted for a board and floor-to-ceiling wall. I think putting some kind of wall behind the bed elongates the bed and makes the wall the focal point of the room.
I knew I wanted to add something fun or cozy to the style of our bedroom at home, and the biggest change in our room was a new dresser in neutral colors and a charming two-sided coffee table. Instead of going for a fancier look like this adorable big screen or these cute little dressers from Pottery Barn, I scoured online stores and thrift stores like Wayfair, Overstock, and Joss & Main. I found our desk and nightstand (similar to these) for a really good price at an online sale. Keep an eye out for online sales on items you want to buy new.
I always use white bedding (like this cover) and add interest with pillows or throws. This summer I added a bold, happy quilt folded at the bottom of the bed with matching comforters. I got it on sale so it’s very affordable and gives you extra performance for a fraction of the money.

The all white square pillows are from Ikea and cost less than $5 a cover. You can also make your own beautiful envelope cushions from fabric you already have or can find cheap; Here I shared a great tutorial on how to make a pillowcase. You can sew a long lumbar pillow for the front of the bed yourself; I love the pillow model from Ikea.
You don’t have to go out and buy everything new to give a room a new feel. See what you have and what you can fix on the cheap. We kept an old hand dress and redid it in white; and it fits perfectly in our new space.
I made the curtains myself to save money, because I could not find durable linen (or linen) at a reasonable price.
We also made a DIY upholstered bench that now sits at the end of the bed – it was made from an old coffee table that we cut to size, painted and tied with some fabric I liked. I also took a lamp we had around our garage and gave it a new look with gold paint. Spray paint is always your friend when you are trying to create a beautiful room on a budget.

We also significantly changed the finish and paint of the old, original, inexpensive floor mirror.
My favorite addition to a room is probably the artwork. I want a quality look, but I don’t want to order a pre-made one at a high price. So I ordered all the frames from Ikea and then I ordered these extra wide ones from Amazon. The extra wide presses offer the 8×10 types I ordered from Minted, more graphic and high end, looking for a reasonable price. You can download and print your own free illustrations or print your own large photos and arrange them on these extra panels to create a fun and creative art display.
Thrift stores, garage sales, discount decor stores (my favorite is HomeSense, like HomeGoods in the US), or shop online at places like Wayfair or Overstock to find something that fits your look. Or better? Buy a house!! Check the house for items that will match your new bedroom decor and replace what you already have.
One place in our room that I do enjoy is the rug, and by junk I mean it’s about $289 for a 9×12 so it still makes sense. I fell in love with this vintage colored rug and knew it would be the perfect piece to bring unity and finish to the space.

I think even when you’ve done most of your room renovations on a reasonable budget, it might be worth spending a little on one key. Also, these types of rugs are really available in all price ranges if you need to stay within a certain budget (like the one here that we recently ordered for our living room).
